Less shocking is that she has fashioned blankets into cloaks, twigs into wands and practiced countless spells on her father, brother, grandparents and me. Unsuccessfully, she attempted a Quidditch game with neighbors and even asked for an owl for Christmas. (that was a big no, obviously, so my mom and dad got her a stuffed owl instead)
To add to the wizard lifestyle in our home, mom has even left notes for Helena on ways she can improve her spells and turn her brother into a goat.
So imagine my surprise when several weeks before her 8th birthday, she requested a Harry Potter cake and several items from Hogwarts, including a real Harry Potter broom, wand and scarf.. To cap it off, my mom and dad got her the official Harry Potter cloak – no more fleece blankets bound at the neck with a safety pin for her!
We watched the Harry Potter movie with some neighbors to celebrate her day and had Harry Potter cake. The whole time, in the back of my mind, I was thanking my mom.
Though she and my dad left to visit my brother the afternoon of Helena’s birthday, she might as well have been right there in the room – her influence was everywhere.
